Within the Town of Essex is the separate municipality of Essex Junction. Still bound together not only by name but by shared high school, police and some taxes, the two separated in 1892 and have been trying to decide whether to recombine ever since. The largest employer in the state of Vermont, IBM, is in Essex Junction. Once referred to as "the memory capital of the world", IBM's Burlington Design Center and 200MM wafer fabrication plant employs 5400. Other large employers include the Napoli Group(MacDonald franchises) and a new Green Mountain Coffee Roaster facility. Not to be missed at the end of the summer is the Champlain Valley Fair at the Fairgrounds in the Village. Other events are held there almost every week through the year including a craft fair, dog shows, home shows, concerts and hot rod car shows.
The "junction" in Essex Junction came from the fact that it was at the intersection of numerous rail lines. Prior to that the area which was settled along waterfalls on the Winooski River was known as Hubbells Falls.
